What's On in Burgundy 2008?

LIQUID GOLD - Photographs by Bettina Rheims

March 1 - 16  The Marucube, tokyo

March 18 - April 2  The French-Japanese institute, tokyo

April 4 - 19  L'Eclaireur, tokyo

Photographer to the stars, Bettina Rheims has captured Andie MacDowell, Madonna, Sharon Stone, Claudia Shiffer, and many more on camera. Now, working with model Margarita Svegzdaite, Rheims has produced eleven especially commissioned portraits entitled ‘Liquid Gold’ to express the ultimate in femininity.
Adventure, glamour, sophistication, fragility, seduction and provocation are all portrayed in the photographs. Here the allure of a woman is celebrated, the ‘embodiment of French Chic’.

Why ‘Liquid Gold’? This is the name often given to Chablis wine, the sponsor of this exhibition. Through her photographs, Bettina Rheims has expressed the sentiment of these famous white wines: sensuality, fragility, natural refined elegance, sincerity and simplicity.

But this is not an elitist exhibition – the huge photographs will be on display for passers-by to appreciate. The first venue, the old floral hall of Covent Garden in London, a huge tourist attraction with boutiques and entertainment, displays the work from the metal rafters for all to see. Similarly, the photographs will be hung on the railings of the Bluebird restaurant in the Kings Road, one of London’s trendiest areas.

Having been on view in London and New York in 2007, the exhibition heads for Tokyo and Moscow in 2008.
